Literacy Program
There is a need in our community for easy access to free books. United Way accepts new and slightly used books to distribute FREE to the public. Children, adults, parents, and grandparents are all discovering the excitement a book can bring. It is especially meaningful when children can pick out a book, take it home, and keep it as their own.
United Way of Mahaska County partners with the AAUW (Area Association of University Women) to pick up the books leftover from their annual Book Sale at Penn Central Mall. Each year this helps to increase the amount of books available to the public year round.
United Way also belongs to NAEIR (National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources) to receive new books five times a year. Many of these are children's books that United Way shares with the local preschools.
