Accountability

The programs funded by United Way of Mahaska County are closely monitored to ensure their success at changing lives for the better. United Way agencies provide services that benefit all kinds of people in our community: youth & children, the elderly, families, and individuals from all walks of life. Who decides? Our United Way makes funding decision based on local priorities. United Way supports agencies and programs that work in this community to strengthen families and individuals.

Each year a panel of community volunteers is assembled to review agency applications and make funding recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. After reviewing all of the applications, the panel members interview agency representatives to ask questions and clarify the agencies’ needs. These local experienced volunteers compare how each program will meet our assessed community needs, and then determine who will be funded and how to distribute funds so that donors know their money is battling the most pressing issues and reaching people who need it most.

Last year, United Way of Mahaska County provided $240,000 for our programs and to agencies supporting youth programs, health and human services, emergency/crisis programs, development, support services, as well as self-sufficiency.   Your gift to United Way makes a difference in Mahaska County. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar stays in our community – helping at home.

United Way stays accountable to our donors and volunteers by contracting with a local accounting firm to conduct an annual audit.
